What Is the Perfect Swimming Pool Temperature?
Opinions vary when it comes to anything related to temperature. What is too cold for some is just right for others and vice versa.
But in the case of swimming pools, there’s more than just personal preference to consider. You also need to think about the use of the pool and how the temperature affects the health and hygiene of the water.
That’s why we’ve put together this article to explore what the perfect pool temperature might be for your specific case.
What to consider with your pool water temperature
Chlorine is the chemical that keeps your pool water clean by killing bacteria and other pathogens. Bacteria and algae thrive in warmer water, so when a pool’s temperature is higher, both chlorine and pool filters have to work harder to achieve the same level of cleanliness.
However, different swimmers and different environments will require different temperatures, which is why pinpointing the optimal water temperature is somewhat of a balancing act.
So let’s take a look at the five examples of users and pool types and what temperatures work best for them. Please note that there is a lot of variation and opinions on the optimal temperature, so this should be used as a guide only.
-
For adults
When a pool is used exclusively by adults, whether at your home or a competitive swimming event, the water can be around 82 – 84℉. That’s because swimming for exercise will warm up the swimmer and so cooler water will help with maintaining a comfortable body temperature. Ensure the water is not too cold though as this can be unsafe.
-
For children and elderly people
Both elderly swimmers and young swimmers, such as babies and children, require slightly warmer water, somewhere in the region of 84 – 90℉, and in the higher portion of that range for really young babies. If both adults and children are using the water, you should err on the side of what children and elderly people need to ensure a family-friendly experience.
-
Indoor pools
In the case of indoor pools, you also need to consider the temperature of the room and how it will interact with the water temperature. Therefore, you should aim to have the water slightly cooler than the room temperature to prevent too much evaporation.
-
Outdoor pools
The temperature of outdoor pools will need to be adapted to the conditions of where you live so consider the temperature of the seasons where the pool will be in use, and adjust accordingly. Heaters and heat pump chillers are also an option to help you achieve the right temperatures outdoors.
-
Hydrotherapy
For wellness and relaxation purposes, such as for hydrotherapy pools, water will need to be hotter than average. We recommend somewhere in the region of 90 – 95℉ to get the full benefits.
As you can see, compromises may need to be had when setting the temperature, balancing this with considerations on pool cleanliness and hygiene.
